Northern Mozambique is one of the World's last remaining unspoiled destinations. Encompassing three provinces (Cabo Delgado, Niassa, and Nampula) with a total area of 280,000 km2, Northern Mozambique is a nature-lover's paradise. It is an untouched area dotted with majestic baobab trees and wild mangrove forests. (Six species of mangroves occur in Northern Mozambique alone.) And it offers unique species such as the dugong - the rare sea cow found along the coast - and the colourful cyclids, found only in Lake Niassa. (Source: www.Northern-Mozambique.com)
To preserve the natural environment and to promote sustainable destinations, the newly established Northern Mozambique Arc Forum is working with Solimar International with guidance from National Geographic to develop a geotourism program for the region. As one of the first of its kind in the world, this program allows the Northern Mozambique Region to join a select group of countries and regions working follwing the principles of geotourism to promote tourism that enhances and sustains the environment, culture, and heritage of tourism destinations.
The
first phase of the program involves the creation of a local
Geotourism Stewardship Council that represents all aspects
of geotourism - including both the public and private sectors
involved in tourism, historic preservation, conservation,
and community development. The council will spearhead the
geotourism process and maintain communication with National
Geographic's Center for Sustainable Destinations. The council
will also lead the development of a Geotourism
MapGuide that will showcase the geotourism attractions
in the region and improve promotion of a Northern Mozambique
tourism product.
