Quilálea Private Island

Area: The Quirimbas Archipelago
Lodge Type: Lodge
Website: www.quilalea.com

Quilálea lies 55 kilometres north of Pemba City and 12 kilometres from the mainland town of Quissanga. It is in a marine sanctuary in Mozambique’s Quirimbas Archipelago, a 500,000 hectare reserve area endorsed by the WWF. The Sanctuary is a nursery for nesting green and hawk beak turtles and humpback whales shelter their young before migrating.

ACCOMMODATION:
Spacious villas with palm tree thatched roofs and a large private teak veranda with panoramic sea views. With air conditioning and ceiling fans.

ACTIVITIES:
Scuba Diving & Snorkelling, Fishing, Canoeing, Kayaking, Excursions to Ibo Island, Excursions to Sencar Island, Excursions to Quirimba Island, Dhow cruises, Picnics and Massages in Karma Salama, as well as special secret hideaway dinner spots for honeymooners and other romantics.

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS:
After negotiations with itinerant fishermen to vacate the island, we proceeded with the project to build a resort to make the Sanctuary viable with a minimum impact on the island's ecology.

In building the project, we employed the same fishermen and villagers from neighbouring islands (about 60), and for transport we used 10 local dhows (fishing boats) a day to move the local materials onto the island.

In addition, Teak and Mahogany were carved by a local Maconde sculptor, and carpenters made the furniture, utilizing marble from the province, flagstones, Makuti thatch, rope and mats all from this same area. All the local craftsmen helped with Quilalea’s creation.

The same original fishermen were then trained in different sectors, housekeeping, restaurant, kitchen, laundry.... They have made it possible with the managers to achieve a 5* resort. Seafood and fish are purchased on a daily basis from local fisherman and brings them into the cash economy.

CONSERVATION:
The sanctuary in the last 3 years has regenerated fully and fish, corals and turtles are now abundant. (The Darwin Foundation comes every two years to do the monitoring.) High temperatures of the ocean waters in the summer do not affect the sanctuary badly, because of deep ocean channels around Quilalea (only some coral bleaching.)
The island is well protected from heavy tropical storms and finds itself out of the cyclone belt.
