Johan Calitz Safaris is one of the biggest and most well known Professional Hunters and Outfitters in Southern Africa. His companies have entered into joint venture partnerships with various communities and concentrate on conservation through sustainable wildlife utilization and internationally acceptable ethical hunting practices, benefiting both the environment as well as the communities in a particular area.
Johan Calitz Safaris, on behalf of SGDRN, manages approximately 400,000 ha of pristine wilderness area southwest of the Niassa Game Reserve and situated between the Luatise and Lugenda rivers. This hunting concession is known as block D2 and situated in the Niassa Reserve buffer zone. The closest town is Lichinga, a small but vibrant village.
ACCOMMODATION:
The camp is situated on the banks of the river. There is a good network of bush roads as well as a landing strip. The camp consists of four (4) luxury, en-suite Meru safari tents and a communal area consisting of a kitchen, dining room and deck. The tents are furnished with comfortable beds and linen, cupboards and chairs and the en-suite bathrooms are fitted with hot/cold showers and basins, flush toilets, towels and toiletries. A daily laundry service is provided.
Scrumptious meals and drinks are served around on the dining deck or around a campfire under a star-studded African sky.
Well-trained and dedicated camp managers, a paramedic as well as a guide, camp and field staff is on hand to ensure the comfort and safety of clients.
ACTIVITIES:
Johan Calitz Safaris offer custom made dangerous and plainsgame hunting as well as photographic safaris for the discerning eco-tourist. The area has a healthy population of predators, such as lion, leopard, hyena and jackal as well as other dangerous game animals, such as elephant, buffalo, hippopotamus and crocodile. Roosevelt Sable, Eland, Kudu, Reedbuck, bushbuck, Bushpig, various species of duiker, Liechtenstein Hartebeest, Waterbuck, Warthog and a wide variety of birds and flora are found in the area.
COMMUNITY PROGRAMS:
Johan Calitz Safaris makes use of local labour and skills and are actively involved in training and promoting the socio economical development of the community in the area.
CONSERVATION:
Johan Calitz Safaris employ two full time anti-poaching units that are not only controlling poaching, but who are used to educate the local community in sustainable fishing practices and soil and fire management. The company work closely together with the Niassa Game Warden and SGDRN to ensure sustainable utilization of the natural recourses.
RATES:
Hunting packages are custom made and the marketing office can be contacted for details. Photographic safaris are available from $250 to $300 per person per day, inclusive of meals, drinks, accommodation, laundry services and game drives. Particulars can be obtained from the marketing office.

How To Get There
Clients who wish to fly to the area can do so by flying from Johannesburg or Dar es Salaam to Pemba. From there, a two-hour charter flight will fly them to the private landing strip near the camp. Self-drive clients must have fully equipped 4X4 vehicles and will be met by our staff in Lichinga from where it is a further 6-8 hour drive to camp, depending on weather and road conditions.
