Dugong Dive Centre was established in 1999. It is situated at the Centro Nautico on Nankarramo Beach, near the Fortaleza de São Sebastião, on the historical World Heritage Site of Ilha de Moçambique. Dugong Dive Centre offers you diving, kayaking, sailing, motorized dhow trips to other nearby islands where you can witness turtle nesting, breaching whales in season (August to November), dolphin encounters, birdlife and spectacular sunsets.
ACCOMMODATION:
Casa Dugong is a typical 19th century flat roofed Mediterranean house, which comfortably accommodates six people on a bed and breakfast basis. It is fully equipped for self catering and serviced daily. This four-bedroom house offers two air conditioned bedrooms with double beds and two bedrooms with single beds as well as two bathrooms. The property includes an outside patio and garden equipped with barbeque facilities and is located on the north side of the Island near the Dive Centre and the 16th century Fortaleza de São Sebastião – a mere 100 meters from the beach.
ACTIVITIES:
The region offers superb diving for experts and novices alike. Two walls of 18m and 30m depths between the small islands of Ilha de Goa and Sena offer a host of life such as resident Napoleon wrasse, clown triggers, morays, giant brindle bass, passing shoals of barracuda, kingfish, tuna and other game fish as well as dolphin and turtles. Two recently excavated 16th century historic wrecks, the Nossa Sra. da Conciliação and IDM 003, are now accessible to advanced divers and snorkellers. The dive school offers Discover Scuba Diving experiences for those who have never stuck their head below water before, as well as Open Water courses and Adventure dives. From Ilha, we offer a transfer service to Nacala Bay, where there are more diving options, as an add-on to your trip.
In addition, Dugong Dive Centre offers kayaking excursions. Stable, plastic one- or two-seater kayaks are a great way to explore the island and the mangroves from a different angle and are available for half or full day hire. The centre also offers sailing excursions in a traditional wooden dhow or transport by motorized dhow to other islands and beaches. Other activities include fly fishing (charters available upon request) and whale watching from August to November during which time family pods of Humpbacks rule the bays.
DHOW SAFARIS
Join us in sailing our 12 meter double mast dhow and experience the romance of the full sale, the serenity and quiet of gliding these calm and crystal waters and throw yourself back a thousand years, for nothing much has changed with these crafts.
Dhows have been sailing the east African coast for centuries.
It was in these majestic crafts that most trading took place in the Indian Ocean, then known as the Zanj Sea.
Today the Dhow Safari Company offers you a unique opportunity to sail the Zanj in an authentic, locally built dhow, just as it was then.
Discover the Mossuril area, in the Nampula Province in the remote north of Mozambique, with its three magnificent bays, namely Conducia to the north, Mossuril in the centre where Ilha de Moçambique a UNESCO World Heritage Site is positioned and Mokambo bay to the south.
This is an area of extreme beauty, with white sand beaches, uninhabited islands, and unexplored mangrove forests, rich in bird and fish life.
In all three bays dolphins are habitually sited and they range from the shy Indo-pacific hump back, spinner dolphin, bottle nose to the rare deep water Risso´s dolphin.
In season the Humpback whale seems to holiday in these bays and various groups can be seen breeching or feeding, in one day.
Two, three and five day safaris available.
Minimum of four people required.
CONSERVATION:
For a number of years, Dugong Dive Centre had been involved in demarcating eight protected sanctuary areas, within the proposed greater Mossuril Marine Reserve to serve as nurseries, to re-establish the fish stocks, and protect the reefs from destructive fishing practices and the lime manufacturing industry. Mangroves, which are being stripped were also included in these zones. With the approval of the maritime authorities, we were hoping to implement the first of these sanctuaries over the reefs, thus ensuring the protection of nesting turtles, fish and birdlife. Unfortunately we recieved no cooperation from the authorities and decided to shelve the project.

How To Get There
Access to Ilha de Moçambique is very costly and time consuming. You are required to fly into Nampula airport and then take a two and one half hour drive to Ilha. Road transfers can be organized and cost a further $150.00 USD each way.
There is a strong possibility that your luggage may go a stray and recovery can take between 2 to 5 days. It is best to travel light, with hand luggage only.
Precautions
Ilha de Moçambique is also a high risk malaria area and we therefore strongly recomend the use of profalatics as medical facilities on Ilha are practically non existant and of a very low standard. We advise that you refrain from using the beaches around Ilha de Moçambique as they are mainly used by the locals as a toilet to deficate and dump their rubish. During the rain season, cholera, typhoid and yellow fever are also prevalent and we advise that you enquire at any tropical "travel clinic" in order to get the necessary jabs. Remember, "Prevention is better than cure"...
