Virtually unknown to the outside world and undisturbed for centuries there is a place where time has stood still. This is Ibo Island, or as the locals calls it: Ilha do Ibo. Nominated for World Heritage status, Ibo is the most fascinating, idyllic island you could dream of visiting.
Ibo Island also falls within the newly created Quirimbas National Park. Beyond the coral reefs inhabited by turtles and colourful tropical fish, the sea around Ibo is also home to pods of dolphins, whales and the rare, shy dugong. Discover vast stretches of idyllic beaches and dive some of the world's richest coral reefs. Explore a coastline fringed by tropical islands on an ancient Arab Dhow - still built to the same design as the vessels which a 1000 years ago plied the trading routes between India and Africa. Snack on cashew nuts and tropical fruit and dine on the freshest of seafood of every description!
ACCOMMODATION:
Ibo Island Lodge encompasses three magnificent mansions each over 150 years old and located right on the prime waterfront site, where romantic dhows sail out to sea on each high tide. Each of the twelve rooms are individually designed, en-suite, large, air conditioned, and boast antiques and handcrafted furniture, with magnificent wooden doors and shutters that evoke the original design. Sumptuous dining features freshly Ibo-grown organic vegetables, fruits and produce combining traditional specialties with wonderful seafood. Romantic dinners can be served on the wide tranquil verandas, around the pool, or on the roof terrace restaurant both with awesome views over the sea.
IBO ISLAND LODGE ACTIVITIES:
Beach: Close to the island is one of Ibo’s best kept secrets - the most beautiful and pristine beach in the Quirimbas Archipelago! A 15 minute motorized boat trip takes you to the most perfect powder white beach surrounded by sea and totally luxurious in seclusion. Here you are free to enjoy the dazzling aquamarine clear waters perfect for snorkelling, swimming and relaxing. Transfers to this beach are included each day for guests, with dolphins and turtles regularly spotted en-route.
The Ibo Island guided historical experience: A remarkable, often emotional journey recounting the history of Ibo. Guided historical and cultural activities enable guests to immerse themselves in the unchanged, ancient culture of Ibo and the rare chance to interact with the wonderfully hospitable islanders.
Unique guided mangrove excursion: Fully guided, guests will be taken into Ibo’s lush, fertile mangrove channels to understand more about this precious ecosystem and the outstanding bird and marine life it supports.
Sea kayaking in calm flat waters: A chance to navigate winding channels with breathtaking scenery or island hop safely under the expert leadership of your guide. With an abundance of birdlife Ibo is also an ornithological paradise.
Humpback whales protect their calves in the calm waters surrounding Ibo. Excellent sightings are possible in season from August to early November before they migrate.
