Days 1-3: Lake Niassa
Take the historic MV IIala Ferry from Malawi’s Likoma island to Mozambique’s Cobue, a quaint lakeside village with an old Anglican ruin. Spend a night (or two) at Nkwichi Lodge (link to Nkwichi) or arrange a boat ride with one of the locals to Metangula, where you can stay in locally-run Complexo Cetuka (link to Cetuka). Try your hand at kayaking along the lake’s many coves or simply relax on its sandy beaches, listening to the calls of the African fish eagle.

Days 4-6: Niassa Reserve
From Metangula, travel on to Niassa’s capital, Lichinga, where you catch a transfer to the nearby Niassa Reserve, arranged through one of the hunting operators such as Luwire (link) or Johan Calitz Safaris (link). Still relatively unknown, the reserve is nearly twice as large as Kruger National Park and offers a stunning and vast landscape dotted with iselbergs. After a few days of photographic safaris, treat yourself to a charter flight to the port city of Pemba - the gateway to the Quirimbas Archipelago.

Days 7-9: Pemba
Relax around the infinity pool at the upscale Pemba Beach Hotel (link) or Nautilus Beach Resort (link), which is located right on the white sand Wimbe Beach. For those diving enthusiasts, colorful reefs are located only a short boat ride away. Take a day trip (by air charter) to historic Ibo Island and wander through its quiet and atmospheric main street. Be sure to peruse the locally produced Makonde sculptures or colorful capulanhas on offer in this charming city before you catch your flight from Pemba to either Dar Es Salaam or Johannesburg (via Maputo).
