| Day 1: Pemba, Mozambique |
On arrival at Pemba Airport, please proceed to the hotel shuttle bus for a scheduled transfer to Pemba Beach Hotel.
Pemba, formerly known as Porto Amelia, is the vibrant capital of Cabo Delgado Province. The city lies on the south shore of Pemba Bay, the third largest bay in the world. The modern port, the international airport, world-class hotels and restaurants, and a network of newly-repaired roads combine with the historic charm and colonial architecture of the old city to give a fascinating and vibrant destination situated on this stretch of Mozambican coast.
In central Pemba there is an authentic local market or Souk, where arts and crafts, as well as traditional silverware can be bought - a bargain hunter's delight.
Pemba Beach Hotel is the only deluxe hotel situated on the outskirts of Pemba. Located on Wimbe Beach on the outskirts of the city, the hotel boasts an aesthetically unique East African architecture throughout the public areas of the hotel. All rooms have magnificent ocean views, and facilities include restaurant, bar, infinitive pool, conference venue, business centre, activities centre, floodlit tennis courts as well as a yacht marina.
Outside the rooms, manicured lawns stretch down to the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The infinity edge salt-water swimming pool presents an excellent opportunity to enjoy sundowner cocktails whilst admiring the breathtaking view.
Your stay at Pemba Beach Hotel includes breakfast, airport transfers and non-motorised watersports.
The hotel offers sunset cruises that sail into the bay of Pemba either to the north point (Londo) or to the harbour, where the water is predominantly calm, and guests can marvel at the amazing sunsets, with the huge Baobab trees and unspoiled coastline only a stone’s throw away.
Other activities include:
Kayaking
With a range of single kayaks, a double kayak, and even fishing kayaks to offer, this is one of the most popular non-motorised sport activities. Guests enter and exit the water in front of the activity center (Clube Naval) where they are assisted by trained staff to ensure safety and enjoyment for an hour or two.
Hobie Sailing
By far the most requested of the self-guided sailing options offered (gypsy and laser sailing are also available). Guests disembark from the small beach next to our marina, where trained staff set up the Hobie cats and assist guests with entering and exiting the water for an hour or two of exhilarating sailing.
There are two options for snorkelling at Pemba: the first option is self-guided snorkelling off the beach (gear provided free of charge for hotel guests) and the other alternative is to go out on one of the hotel’s motorised boats for a two-hour excursion to snorkel the reefs out at sea (between 5 and 15 minutes away). These trips include all snorkeling equipment.
Motorised watersports include skiing (tandem and slalom), tube skiing and banana tube rides. |

| Days 2 - 4: Ibo Island |
After breakfast this morning, you will be taken by shuttle bus back to Pemba Airport. Transfer to Ibo Island by light charter aircraft, a scenic flight over the Quirimbas Archipelago. You will enjoy 3 nights at Ibo Island Lodge, inclusive of daily breakfast, dinner, scheduled activities and non-motorised watersports.
Virtually unknown to the outside world and undisturbed for centuries there is a place where time has stood still. This is Ibo Island, or as the locals calls it: Ilha do Ibo.
Nestled in the awesome Quirimbas Archipelago of northern Mozambique, and nominated for World Heritage status, Ibo is an island that is remote and untouched by commercial developments and one of the most fascinating, idyllic islands you could dream of visiting.
For the last 500 years Ibo Island was a prosperous and important trading post along the coast of East Africa. Grand colonial administration buildings lined its streets, and three majestic forts stood guard over the sea. This little coral and palm-fringed island has a turbulent history of slave trading, pirates, and intrigue.
The ruins date back to the early 1500s and Africans share their history with Arabs, Indians and Portuguese.
Ibo Island Lodge encompasses three magnificent mansions each over one hundred years old with walls over a meter thick and lofty high ceilings. Located right on the prime waterfront site, where romantic dhows sail out to sea on each high tide, the lodge offers a classic island experience, and with just twelve luxury rooms assures guests of exceptional service and flexibility.
The luxurious rooms are individually designed, en-suite, large, air conditioned, and boast antiques and handcrafted furniture, with magnificent carved wooden doors and shutters that evoke the buildings original design.
The wide verandas are adorned with mahogany and teak day beds, carved by some of the islands most skilled artists and decorated with the softest of cushions covered in vibrant local fabrics. Ibo Island Lodge is a stylish, elegant and unique destination.
Ibo Island Lodge is due to open in August 2006.
Guests partake in a multitude of experiences: beach, sail, swim or fish. Become immersed in the unchanged, ancient culture of Ibo Island and the rare chance to interact with Ibo’s wonderfully hospitable islanders, or simply relax, refresh the senses and soak up the romantic atmosphere.
Special activities will enable guests to immerse themselves in the unchanged, ancient culture of Ibo and the rare chance to interact with the wonderfully hospitable islanders. Fully guided activities can include:
BEACH: One of the most beautiful and pristine beach in the Quirimbas Archipelago is closely accessed from the island, and one of Ibo’s best kept secrets. A 15 minute motorised boat trip takes you to the most perfect powder white beach surrounded by sea and totally luxurious in seclusion. Here you are free to enjoy the dazzling aquamarine clear waters perfect for snorkeling, swimming and relaxing. A daily transfer to the beach is included for all guests. Dolphins and turtles are regularly spotted en-route.
THE IBO ISLAND HISTORICAL EXPERIENCE: A remarkable, often emotional journey, recounting the history of Ibo. Guided historical and cultural activities enable guests to immerse themselves in the unchanged, ancient culture of Ibo and the rare chance to interact with the wonderfully hospitable islanders.
UNIQUE GUIDED MANGROVE EXCURSION: Fully guided, guests will be taken into Ibo’s lush, fertile mangrove channels to understand more about this precious ecosystem and the outstanding bird and marine life it supports.
SEA KAYAKING IN CALM FLAT WATERS: A chance to navigate winding channels with breathtaking scenery or island hop safely under the expert leadership of your guide. With an abundance of birdlife Ibo is also an ornithological paradise. |
