As in any developing country, certain precautions must be taken when travelling in Mozambique. The country has limited medical facilities, particularly in the north, and travellers should purchase emergency medical evacuation insurance in the case that evacuation to South Africa is necessary. Pharmacies are found in most towns, including 24-hour pharmacies in larger cities, but it is recommended that travellers bring any medicines they might need. In the capital of Maputo, both public and private clinics are available. In general, doctors expect cash payment for services.

Given that malaria is endemic, travellers are also advised to contact their doctors for advice on prophylaxis. Be sure to take precautionary measures against mosquito bites, such as wearing repellent and long sleeved clothing at night. Diseases caused by unsanitary conditions are common in the country, and basic hygiene precautions (such as drinking only bottled or boiled and filtered water) are recommended. While no inoculations for smallpox, cholera or yellow fever are required, travellers should check with the Mozambican Embassy for any updated requirements and with their doctor on any other vaccinations prior to arrival.
